101 Sprites

Sprite Labour:

You can hire a Sprite Team even if you have rescued no more than a single
member of it. Even if you have rescued quite a few members of any team that
you hire, you will find them very untrustworthy at the beginning. If you speak
to them, they will whine and complain that the work is too hard, that they
haven't a clue how to perform their tasks or that they wish they could go out
and play instead of working! This is their training period. If you look at
the gauge under each Sprite's name in your Farm Assets Menu, you not only will
see the number of hearts that Sprite has for you, but his amount of expertise.
When the bar is filled, the Sprite will be an expert at his appointed task.
When the bar is empty, you really cannot count on them for much.

In other words, if you hire an inexperienced Sprite Team to water your crops,
expect most of them to remain unwatered. If you hire a Team to feed your
animals, you had best go into every Barn to feed the ones they miss! One of
the more amusing examples of Sprite inexperience is the way they will shear
your Sheep. They will shear only 1/4 of each Sheep rather than shearing one
sheep completely! This actually is a hint, however, to a trick that can be
used to obtain more wool. You yourself can shear your Sheep only 1/6 using the
Touch Glove. After shearing the sheep six times to obtain 6 balls of small
wool, you will be able to shear it WITHOUT the TouchGlove the same number of
times. Sheep sheared in this fashion always give small wool. To obtain larger
balls of wool, you must use the Touchglove.

Once Sprites are trained properly, they will perform their tasks with lightning
speed and efficiency, but at the start, they will be almost useless.

Incidentally, one of the first Teams you may wish to hire in Winter is the
Fishing Team as you then become eligible to receive the random Fishing Bonus of
1,000,000,000G. You will not obtain this bonus in any other season, however.
You need not rescue more than two members of the team in order to obtain the
Bonus.

Sprite Events:

Rescuing specific numbers of Sprites will trigger Special Events. When you
have rescued a total of 40 Sprites, Guts will be obliged to construct a
stairwell behind the counter at the Sprite Company Tree. This is the first
Sprite Event you will experience.

When you have rescued 60 Sprites, the Harvest Goddess will appear. Your act
will have restored her to life. From that point, you will be able to visit her
at the Goddess Pond. Moreover, you will be able to marry and unlock the 4th
Mine, provided all other requirements have been met. As you can see,
therefore, the rescue of at least 60 Sprites is critical to your success in
Harvest Moon.

When you have rescued all 12 members of any working Team of Sprites, you will
be invited to a Sprite Party if you leave your house late at night on that same
day. You will be met by two representative Sprites from the Team who will
invite you to a Dance. You will spend the night dancing with them and you will
not return to your home until morning. Make certain that your energy levels
are high before you leave the house that night!

Sprite Dance Party:

The day I rescued the 12th member of the Green Team, I left my house at 11.00
p.m. and experienced an event:

Me: !
Fraw: Good evening.
Ridge: Good evening.
Me: ?
Fraw: You know, all of our team members are here!
(fanfare)
Ridge: We're going to have a festive dance party, and we'd like you to attend,
Freyr.

My choices:
I'll go.
I won't go...
Both sprites: (with music)
Fraw: Yaaay! Things will be fun with everyone together!
One on each side of me, dust is sprinkled.
I hear: knock, knock, knock, then find myself in the centre of a circle of
twelve Sprites.

Ali: Cool! You came here to join us, Freyr.
Paddy: Let's dance.
Forest (team leader): Enough talking! Are you guys ready? All right! Let's
start our dance party.
Paddy: Yes, sir.

Two sprites move a little to the side on either side.

Paddy: Let's do it!

It's like a Renaissance dance.
The two move towards me, then away from me. The ones above and below move
towards me, then away from me. The leader is one of the ones above me. Four
Sprites at each corner play the flute while the other eight perform the dance.
It is very formal and slow. At the end, fairy dust is sprinkled on all of them.

Paddy: Phew. That was so much fun.
Forest: Our party is fun because every one is here! Freyr, thank you very
much for rescuing every one. We're lucky to have you.
Paddy: Thank you.
Forest; It's getting late. We should go to bed.
Freyr, thanks again. Good night.

I find it is dawn of the next morning, so if you know this will occur before
you go outside at night, make certain your energy levels are good or you will
awaken with fatigue from your long night dance.

The Legendary Harvest Sprites:

Those players who are familiar with FoMT and/or MFoMT will know and love the
'Legendary Harvest Sprites', the 7 Sprites who live and work in Mineral Town.
Although there are 101 Sprites who are natives of the Valley, the 'Legendary
Harvest Sprites' nonetheless have appointed tasks in this game. You will meet
them on two occasions at least: when you unlock the second Hot Springs and
whenever you grow a 'Giant' crop.

The Legendary Harvest Sprites are named Aqua, Staid, Nappy, Chef, Hoggy, Bold
and Timid.

Whenever you see a Giant crop in your field, stand next to it and investigate
it by pressing 'A'. You then will experience a scene with Thomas:

Thomas: Oh, hey, Freyr! That's a huge crop. A crop that large must be a lot
of work to pull up. Want me to help you?

Your options:

Yes, please.
No, thanks.

(If you refuse his aid, you will not be able to harvest the crop in any case,
so you must accept, sooner or later.)

Thomas: All right!
Hey! The Legendary Harvest Sprites! We'll harvest this huge crop!
First, Staid!
Staid: Ok, got it!
Thomas: Next up, Nappy!
Nappy: Harvesting is fun!
Thomas: Next, Bold!
Bold: Leave the heavy work to me!
Thomas: Next up is Chef!!
Chef: Can we cook it?
Thomas: And next is, Aqua!
Aqua: Wow this is just huge!
Thomas: And now, Hoggy!
Hoggy: I'm hungry! Thomas, send flour later!
Thomas: And last, Timid!
Timid: I'll do my best!
Thomas: Ok, every one... pull! Heave ho! There!
It pulled up neatly!
Thomas: Well, that was good! Ok, it's ready for shippiing. There's no need
to thank us. See you later!

When you have spent 100 hours in the first Hot Springs, you will experience an
event when you leave the Spa:

Thomas: Oh, hey, Freyr! You like hot springs, right? If you like them that
much, I'll get another one built. Hey! The Legendary Harvest Sprites! We'll
build a hot spring! First, Staid!
Staid: Ok, got it!
Next up, Nappy!
Nappy: Let's dig a hot spring!
Thomas: Next, Bold!
Bold: leave the heavy work to me!
Thomas: Next up is Chef!
Chef: Can we cook it?
Thomas: And next is Aqua!
Aqua: This is worth doing!
Thomas: And now, Hoggy!
Hoggy: I'm hungry! Thomas, send flour later!
Thomas: And last, Timid!
Timid: I'll do my best!
Thomas: Okay, let's build a hot spring!
Come over to the spring later. There's no need to thank us. See you later!

Tips and Tricks for Rescuing Sprites

Your first priority in rescuing Sprites is to rescue 60 of them. When you do,
the Harvest Goddess will be restored to life and you will be able to marry and
enter the 4th Mine, provided all other requirements have been met in each case.
The section that follows gives a list of the 60 Easiest Sprites to Rescue,
but your own rescue successes may depend on how you play the game.

There are a few tips that may be useful. First of all, it will benefit you
enormously if you use the Touch Glove, have at least one Cow and one Sheep and
perform the ranching bonus trick daily in order to obtain bonus upgraded
product from every animal on your farm, including your horse. You do this by
equipping the brush in your tool slot and the Touch Glove in your accessory
slot. You then keep your Rucksack open and position either your clippers or
your milker in the slot next to the tool slot. You then proceed to wash your
animal. When you press the 'back' button to return to your open rucksack,
immediately switch the clippers or milker with your brush and you will obtain a
bonus upgraded product. The level of upgrade will increase every couple of
days once you begin to perform this trick daily. If your milker is upgraded to
Level 100 in terms of experience, you will obtain 100 bottles of upgraded milk
each time you wash an animal and perform this trick. If you switch the brush
with the clippers, you will obtain an upgraded ball of wool each time you
perform it. In any case, it will allow you to become a billionaire very quickly.

N.B. THE RANCH BONUS TRICK IS A GLITCH THAT WAS ELIMINATED IN LATER VERSIONS
OF THE GAME, INCLUDING THE EUROPEAN/U.K. VERSION. DISREGARD ANY MENTION OF
THIS TRICK IF YOU HAVE A LATER VERSION OF THE GAME.

The reason I mention it here is that it will help you rescue more Sprites.
There are Sprites in particular who are rescued by using the Touch Glove a
specific number of times and other Sprites who are rescued when you ship a
specific number of items or a specific number of animal products. If you are
obtaining 100 bottles of milk from each animal as a bonus product, apart from
the regular milk and wool you obtain from each animal, it will not take long to
ship 10,000 items or 300 animal products (any combination of eggs, milk and
wool).

By shipping 300, 500 and 1000 Milk, Eggs and/or Wool, you will rescue 3 members
of the Red Team. With the following, you will rescue members of the Red or
Yellow Teams: By shearing 100, 300 and 700 pieces of Wool using the Touch
Glove, you will rescue 3 Sprites. By collecting 100, 300 and 700 bottles of
milk using the Touch Glove, you will rescue 3 more. By washing your animals
50, 100 and 300 times using the Touch Glove, you will rescue 3 more. By
petting your animals 50, 100, 300 and 500 times, you will rescue 4 more.

Members of the Green Harvest Team can be rescued through this method as well as
they will be rescued when you have shipped a specific number of any type of
item. It need not be ranch product items but because you will be able to ship
99 or 100 bottles of millk when you use the Ranch Bonus trick, it will not take
very long to rescue Sprites from the Green Team who are rescued when you place
1000, 5000 and 10,000 items in a shipping container.

In other words, not only will you profit enormously in financial terms by using
the Touch Glove, you will rescue almost two full teams of Sprites.

Furthermore, using the Bonus Ranching Trick to obtain milk, you are limited
only by time, energy and patience as to how many bottles you collect. If you
equip the Brush and place the Milker in the slot next to the brush, then equip
the TouchGlove in your Accessory Slot, as soon as you activate the Brush (by
standing in front of the animal and pressing A), press the 'Back' button. DO
NOT EVEN BEGIN TO WASH THE ANIMAL. You can do this again and again to obtain
product each time. The only reason milk is superior to wool is because, if you
have raised the level of your Milker to 99, you can obtain 99 or 100 bottles of
milk each time you perform the trick. Caution: Your energy will be depleted
quickly, so make certain that you restore it if you intend to use the trick
again and again on a single animal in one day. Though this means, you will be
able to ship enormous quantities of milk even if you own only a single cow.

The reason that milk is recommended above wool is because you can obtain 99 or
100 bottles of milk each time you use the trick if your milker is raised to
Level 99. Shipping this milk will result in the rescue of a number of Sprites
faster than shipping wool as you never can obtain more than a single ball of
wool each time you activate the bonus trick.

There is another act that you can perform to rescue quite a few Sprites. That
is the act of using your watering can. You would be well advised to upgrade
your Watering Can as quickly as possible to be able to rescue as many Sprites
as possible by using this tool as in some cases, it is a matter of a total
number of squares watered. In four cases, however, it is a matter of watering
one secret random square on the map.

To do this, you need to till the square first, which requires the use of your
hoe. The random secret square does not change, however, so you can search
different areas of the map by tilling the earth and then watering it without
saving your game until you actually manage to rescue a Sprite.

In other words, choose a section of the Map and save your game immediately
before you use ANY tool. Clear the land completely by using your Axe, Hammer
and Sickle where necessary. This is done most easily if you equip the
corresponding necklace and perform these tasks without leaving any building as
no time then will pass. When the land has been cleared fully, charge your hoe
and till the area. Charge your watering can and water the area. If a Sprite
appears, you then can reload your game and go directly to the square that
activated his rescue, tilling and watering that square only before you save
your game. (You can do this by a process of elimination by tilling and
watering only a few squares at a time until you hit upon the precise square
that results in the rescue of the Sprite.)

Obviously, if you fail to find a Sprite, you need not save the game but simply
reload to the point where no action had taken place. Clearing a section of
land does fulfill a purpose, however, even if it does not contain a hidden
Sprite. By clearing a field, you free more 'drop spots' for wild items. It
is a matter of priorities. In the first year, when you have to strive mightily
merely in order to survive, you may not wish to spend too much energy in
clearing random fields on the map.

Finally, if you look at the list of Sprites and the descriptions of how each is
rescued, you will see that casting a fishing rod into any body of water is
almost guaranteed to rescue a Sprite. Whenever a new body of water appears,
therefore, you need to cast your Fishing Rod there, whether it is a Hot Spring
or a Duck Pond.

A quick and inexpensive way to ship 1000 items to obtain a Sprite AND a horse
is by purchasing bird feed from Popuri and shipping it. By doing this, you can
obtain your horse in the first week of gameplay as Takakura will come to the
farm with a horse for you as soon as 1000 items have been shipped. You can
ship weeds as well, but it will take you longer to collect 1000 weeds.

1. Guts: You will acquire this Sprite in the first scene with the Witch Princess.

2. Neptune (Brown Team): Available from the start.

3. Mercury (Black Team): In your first scene with Guts, Mercury will be found.

cannot do this from a distance by using a Necklace. You must be standing AT
the watering hole.)

11. Uranus: Raise one person's FP to 100

12. Misty: Fill your watering can 10 times. (N.B. You can do this again and
again without emptying the watering can.)

of two of the Sprites, the season of the year.

22. Beta: Wash your animals 50 times using the Brush and Touch Glove.

23. Sue: Collect Milk 100 times using the Touch Glove (In other words,

Festival and a Cow in the Cow Festival, Saturn will appear on Tuesday morning
after the Cow Festival.)

32. Fraw: Place 1000 items in your shipping container. (This will result in
the gift of a horse from Takakura as well.) N.B. Shipping 1000 pieces of bird
seed purchased from Popuri is a quick and inexpensive method of acquiring the
horse in the first week of gameplay. You can ship weeds but it will take
longer to collect 1000 weeds.

33. Kevin: Place an item in your horse's saddlebags. (Ship 1000 items to
receive the horse as a gift.)

34. Mars: Ship at least 300 of a single type of item produced on your farm
(crops, fruit, flowers or ranch products, but no processed items) (If you
upgrade your Milker by using it repeatedly, you can obtain 99 or 100 small
milks each time you use it to milk a cow. If you do not upgrade your milker,
you probably can ship 300 yams in your first Autumn without much trouble, as
they yield multiple harvests frequently.)

35. Fisher: Upgrade your Fishing Rod to Mystrile and use it.

36. Forest: Upgrade your Scythe to Mystrile and use it.

and incubating eggs in each one again and again. By doing this, you can have 6
chicks/ducklings born within a single week! Remember that animals born on your
farm will be born with 2 hearts. It therefore is to your advantage to have at
least 1 chick, 1 duckling, 1 calf and 1 lamb born as soon as possible as
festivals are won by animals at maximum heart level.)

61. Baby (White Team): After rescuing 60 Sprites and the Harvest Goddess,
press A in front of the large Pot in the Sprite Company Tree.

Sprite Profiles:

When you have unlocked Channel 3, you will be given information on that channel
about individual Sprites as well as hints on the means by which to rescue other
Sprites. I will include these profiles as time permits.

Gifts can be sent to individual Sprites from the Sprite Company Tree. Each
Sprite Team has a postbox where parcels containing gifts can be posted to
individual members of the team. You can send more than one item to a Sprite in
a single parcel by choosing the quantity you wish to send. Gifts improve the
efficiency of any Sprites who work for you.

Sprite Conversations

You only will be able to speak to individual members of Sprite Teams when they
currently are working for you on a specific area of land. When you speak to
any Sprite, he will make a comment if this is his last day of work. If it is
not his last day of work, he will make a comment and give you the option to ask
him to work the next day or dismiss him.

You will find that the conversation of Sprites is seasonal in nature, and that
many of the comments relate either to the seasons, the habits of other
inhabitants of the Valley or to the Sprite's own skill at his job or his state
of energy. Sprites from different teams often will respond with the same
phrases, but it appears that every individual member of a Team has responses
that differ from every other member of THAT team.

In Spring:

Misty: 'Freshly cooked rice sure is good! Yaaa!'
Muffy is sort of perky, but I think that it is so cute!
Rock is always such a positive person! I want to learn how he does it!
I often see Daryl near the dig site!

Koto: The judge at the cooking fair looks a bit odd, but I've heard he knows
his stuff!
Cody's back looks all lumpy. It reminds me of a craggy mountain!

Anime: Muffy always goes to town to go shopping. Certainly there're lots and
lots of candy and cakes... I'm so jealous...
I... hid it... I loooove not only food, but actually drinks too!

Rainy: 'Every morning, Rock makes a pose in front of the mirror. He's so
cooool!'
'It sure is tough for the guys who have all the girls! That's what Rock said!

Walter: How about you, Freyr? Feel anythiing in springtime? For me,
springtime makes me think of tea!'
'I heard Galen and Dr. Hardy talking about the 'Spring of Life'. It was so
hard, I couldn't follow their conversation..'
'Spring is a season that feels like a fleeting dream. Freyr also should enjoy
spring while it lasts.'

Ceruleano: 'A leader must always be proper and presentable! Hunh? Did you
doze off? How can you do such a thing! Falling alseep... Sheesh!'
Hum... hmmm hmm mmm hmm (song) Hunh? What? What is it? Did I get a
haircut? Ahem. That's right. I'm even more handsome than my usual self...
'.... Sebastian is always having problems with Lumina. I hope I can be
helpful to you.'

Misty: 'Rock is such a positive person. I want to learn how he does it!'
'Muffy is sort of perky, but I think that it is so cute!'

Maddie: 'Sebastian is so polite! I think that our leader really likes him!'
'With the arrival of spring, I get drowsy and fall asleep. I wrote a good
poem, don't you think?
I feel sort of bad for Dr. Hardy. He has so many strange rumours about him!

Roli: 'The judge at the cooking fair looks a bit odd, but I've heard he knows
his stuff!
'Cody's back looks all lumpy, it reminds me of a craggy mountain!'

Karaf: When the first spring winds blow, the season begins!
(He sings): 'Cherry blossoms... When they flutter down... Time for taking a
nap... La-la-la...'

Chorori: 'Why is my heart filled this way in the spring! Romana said the same
thing!'
'The Forget-Me-Not Valley is wonderful, that's why the Harvest Sprites are here.

Fen: 'Flora always seems to be sleepy!

In Summer:

Bran: Why does the sun make it so hot? I want the sun to make summer easier
to get through...
It's hot in the daytime, but still cool in early morning! But I can't really
get up that early...
Summer is actually the season of fireworks!

Pierre: I envy mermaids in the summer. But do they get cold in the winter?

Stony: Isn't there some job where all you do is eat? I have confidence in my
great eating ability! (three stars)
I did a lot! All that's left to do is to go home!@ I can't wait to eat dinner!
This year, the pineapple crop is really good! i can't wait!
It's hot! It's no good! I have to have food!

Tilus: Whenever you scarf down something cold in one gulp, you get a brain freeze!
Summer causes the sun to sparkle. It's so sunny!

Woody: Before you go swimming in a river or in the sea you have to warm up!
You don't want to draown!
Summer sunburns bother me.
I heard a rumour that Dr. Hardy can shoot laser beams from his eyes! Isn't
that cool?
Aaargh! I put in a hard day! Good for me for working so hard today!

Alpen: Another day has drawn to an end. I wanna be able to help more! Thank
you for letting me help today.
There are only some people that can see Sprites, others cannot.
The valley isn't just great for people. It is good for us to live in, too!

Fen: Why does it rain? It's like the sky is crying. It feels so sad!
Is it true that you become pretty when you're in love? I'll try being in love too!
We can use magic, but humans can't. I wonder why that is? It's strange...

Decoy: I worked my hardest! It's refreshing after working so hard!
The onions are brown and have a strange shape. I don't like them very much.
But even if I don't like them, they are good for you so I'll eat them somehow!
If I don't eat well, I won't get any bigger!
I'm not going to be beaten by the heat or the sun... I'm going to keep on working!

Valie: Wow! I sure am tired... That's it! The work day ends here! I'm going
home!
Summer has its own smell. It makes me a bit excited!
I guess I'll get hard at it and finish this work! I'll do my best!

Chorori: 'Because Carter and Flora live in a tent, this season must be really
tough.

Valie: The star-filled sky in the Valley is really great!

Roli: If I had some star-shaped ice cream and a moon-shaped cake, it would be
so cute!

Maddie: I ... saw Gustafa without his glasses on! He was actually... No, I
can't say anything!

Misty: Even during real hot summer days, Hugh still always looks refreshed!

Ceruleano: Rock is always wandering around and looks carefree. I'm a little
bit jealous of him...
Sebastian is always so cheerful and sincere! I'd like to be that way, too.
In the summer, it's rather hectic because of all the Harvest Sprites' laundry.

Rainy: My boss' abacus is his favourite!
My boss uses his abacus when he needs to calculate numbers!

Chorori: Gustafa's guitar skills are really great!

Souly: Wonderfuls are found here and there. That itself is wonderful.
Harvest Sprites give various wonderfuls to many people as presents!

Powery: Just a few minutes ago a girl slapped him on the cheek! I wonder what
game that is?

Koto: Flora is a lot like me. I think she's probably really clumsy, just like me!
I can't remember things too well, so I have to try to remember the important
things.

Souly: Let me heal you with a boom! I know I can do it!
I'll make Forget-Me-Not Valley full of wonderfuls! Come and I'll show you!

Anime: The food that Ruby cooks always looks sooooo gooooood!

earth is it about?

Food is good!

Spirity: Kate was complaining that her dad was a real big pain to deal with.
I am sure that there are all sorts of wonderfuls inside Dr. Hardy's bag!

anything!

Powery: Ha! Ha! Ha! Pant... pant... My powers are recharged! I'm ready to go!

lonely.

Rod: If I were put in a can and sold on a shelf, I'd wish that some nice
person came along and bought me...
My boss uses his abacus when he needs to calculate numbers!

bonsai trees!
Invite someone special to see fireworks! Who will you invite? He-heh, I can't
